Segera Retreat offers “one of the most beautiful lodge experiences in Africa,” Condé Nast Traveler says, and Micato’s old Africa hands enthusiastically agree. The game-rich Laikipia Plateau, set between lordly Mount Kenya and the Great Rift, is a magnificent bit of Africa, and Segera embraces its surroundings with imaginative gusto and delightfully traditional hospitality.
The retreat’s three roomy and elegant villas, graced with bespoke furnishings and original artwork, with vast views across the plateau, are ideal for families and private groups looking for seclusion, gentle luxury, and the wonderful mixture of excitement and deep repose that are the hallmarks of a grand safari.
Segera Retreat’s three exclusive-use villas are part of, but apart from, the lodge’s other six smaller villas, and each has its own pool and outdoor lounge and dining area, a dedicated staff, in-villa meals (if you prefer), access to the lodge’s spa, gym, the delights of owner Jochen Zeitz’s world-class African art collection, and Segera Retreat’s extraordinary collection of African memorabilia, which contains unpublished letters from the likes of Hemingway and David Livingstone and the biplane used in Out of Africa—on which we’ll be happy to arrange a soaring flight that brings Laikipia’s landscapes into heavenly focus.
The three exclusive-use villas: Segera House, a two-story, stone and wood, thatched-roof beauty, with three master suites; The Farmhouse (the old ranch’s original centerpiece), with a master suite and two double bedrooms (and a lovely nook for an au pair or a teenager who’d like some privacy within the house’s privacy); and Villa Segera, whose two walkway-linked master suites are elevated for stunning views of Mount Kenya across the Sugeroi River. And for those with a taste for the charmingly unusual, we can arrange a night out in the lodge’s treehouse, the Nay Palad Bird Nest, where the sidereal sideshow of the African night is especially showy.
The Laikipia is renowned for its game viewing and your Micato Safari Director is intimate with its savannahs and forests—and, as always, he’s ready to tailor your game drives in Segera’s private reserve and on the greater Laikipia to your interests and inspirations.
In addition to getting acquainted with the plateau’s lions, elephants, endangered Patas monkeys, spindly but massive giraffes, rare and rambunctious wild dogs, spectacularly patterned Grevy’s zebras, and an uncountable host of other fascinating creatures, he’ll discuss with you a range of activities: camel excursions and helicopter flights, wild honey gathering with Segera’s staff and jaunts with the lodge’s anti-poaching unit (whose hearty bloodhounds are quick and amazing and absolutely gorgeous). Kids enjoy helping staff gather vegetables from Segera’s extensive garden and visits to local Samburu villages and an excellent and inspiring Segera-supported school remind us once again that people come to Africa to see its animals, but leave in love with its people.
